Why is my pool water milky white after I added chemicals?
Overdose, bad pH/alkalinity, or calcium can cause temporary cloudiness. Run the filter, retest, and avoid stacking products. If it stays milky for days, the filter may be overloaded or the chemistry is still off.
Cloudy pool but chlorine is fine — what else causes it?
Dirty filters, poor circulation, high phosphates, fine dust after wind, or high bather load. Test full chemistry (not just chlorine), check filter pressure, and confirm water is actually moving through returns.
Do clarifiers actually work?
They can help tiny particles clump so the filter can catch them — after chemistry and filtration are correct. Clarifier isn’t a substitute for a clogged filter or zero chlorine.
How long should I run my pool pump when the water is cloudy?
Often 24 hours initially, then at least 8–12 hours daily in summer heat until clear. Weak runtime is one of the most common DIY mistakes on Reddit-style pool threads.
Can a cloudy pool clear on its own?
Sometimes overnight if the filter is clean and chlorine is strong. If it’s still cloudy after a full filter cycle, something is still wrong — don’t keep waiting through a Texas heat wave.
Is cloudy water the same as a green pool?
No. Cloudy is haze or milkiness; green is usually algae. Cloudy can become green if sanitizer stays low, so treat cloudy water as an early warning.

DE powder is coming back into the pool — related to cloudy water?
Yes. Torn grids or a bad grid assembly blow DE into the pool and cloud the water. Stop adding DE and schedule a filter repair — more powder makes it worse.
Should I drain and refill when it’s cloudy?
Rarely for cloudiness alone. Fix filter and chemistry first. Partial drain can help extreme TDS/metals cases after a pro diagnosis.
